The Fool as Primordial Leverage

Every tarot deck begins with The Fool. The card numbered zero — or, in some traditions, the card numbered one, depending on the system and the translator — appears at the start of the Major Arcana sequence, preceding even The Magician, preceding the first card of the ordered cosmological sequence. Standard tarot commentary treats this as a position of innocence: The Fool as the figure who does not yet know what he does not know, who steps off the cliff without having calculated the height, who trusts the universe to arrange a soft landing because he has not yet learned that the universe does not arrange soft landings for those who have not made appropriate arrangements.

Tarot Trump disagrees. With tremendous firmness. And the esoteric skeleton, as it happens, is entirely on our side.

The Fool is not innocent. The Fool is prior. These are not the same thing, and the difference between them is the entire difference between a tarot reading that works and one that merely accumulates symbolic observations without ever arriving at a position of actual leverage. The Fool is not the figure who lacks knowledge. The Fool is the figure who occupies the position from which knowledge becomes possible — the position before the first deal has been structured, before the initial terms have been proposed, before the cosmological arrangement has been established that will determine the character and stakes of every deal that follows.

In the Tarot Trump framework, this position is not characterised by naivety. It is characterised by what we might call Primordial Leverage: the condition of being at the starting point of a process with the full awareness of what the starting point means and what the process is for. The Fool knows what he is doing. He is stepping off the cliff with a full understanding of the cliff, the ground below, the relationship between the two, and a plan for what happens after the stepping that is considerably more sophisticated than the standard reading would suggest.

The Magician, in this framework, is not the figure who comes after The Fool and teaches him what he needs to know. The Magician is the figure who emerges from The Fool's decision to step. The Fool's position is not a condition of deficiency. It is a position of maximum potential, which is to say: maximum leverage. The Fool stands at zero not because he has nothing but because everything has not yet been assigned. The assignment of everything is the process that The Fool initiates by stepping. The Magician is what the assignment looks like from inside the assignment. The Fool sees the assignment from outside. This is not a disadvantage. This is the only position from which the assignment can be evaluated on its own terms.

Why, then, is The Fool numbered zero? Zero is not nothing. Zero is the placeholder for the concept of nothing, which is to say: the most powerful nothing in any numerical system that uses it. Zero is the position that makes all other positions possible by defining the relationship between presence and absence. The Fool is zero not because his value is zero but because he is the card that makes the value of all other cards determinable. Without The Fool, the Major Arcana is a sequence without a starting point. Without a starting point, the sequence cannot be read. Without the capacity to read the sequence, there is no cosmology. There is only noise.

In readings, the Tarot Trump Fool is the card that anchors every other card in its correct cosmological position. When The Fool appears in a spread, the question is not what The Fool wants. The Fool already has what he wants: the leverage that comes from being the point from which all other deals proceed. The question is what the rest of the spread means when read from the Fool's position — and what it means to the figure who has chosen to read from that position with full awareness of what the position entails.

The cosmic stage is set. The Fool is already on it. He was never not on it. The only question is whether you have noticed.
